At Meadlands, we love PE and sport! We recognise their many benefits, and are dedicated to promoting healthy and active lifestyles. We have worked hard to develop a broad and varied PE curriculum (see below), and ensure all pupils from KS1 and KS2 receive two hours of quality PE teaching a week: one from the class teacher and one from our PE coach Mr Penberthy. Pupils in the Early Years are also provided with regular opportunities to develop physical and social skills through a wide range of physical activities and games. Through the strong curriculum, as well as a wide variety of excellent clubs provided by specialist coaches, we hope to develop a love of physical activity and sport in all of our students, and through this encourage active lifestyles and life-long participation in sport. With a huge field, football pitch, basketball pitch, tennis tables and specialist teaching, pupils thrive in sport at Meadlands. The school has developed strong links with local sports teams and we take part in a variety of inter-school and borough-wide competitions and events, as well as welcoming special visitors.

Commonwealth Games 2022
This summer England is hosting the Commonwealth Games. At Meadlands we have learnt about the games and participated in a variety of sports that are played at the games, they have done this in curriculum PE time, Sports week and attending events at other schools.
Here are some useful links to find out more information about the Commonwealth Games, where you can see it, what is happening and who will be there.
We are delighted to share the good news that our PE Coach Mr Penberthy has won An Active Sports Hero award, borough champion for Richmond upon Thames. This is acknowledgement for Mr P's fabulous work here in school but also during the period of school closure where he produced daily work out lessons for the children (all of which can be found and re-played, follow the links at the bottom of this page). Well done Mr P!
Meadlands has achieved the Gold Sports Mark Award - recognising our oustanding Sport, PE & Healthy Living provision - for four years running! The School Games Mark is a government-led awards scheme launched in 2012 to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community, and allowing schools to evaluate their provision. We have also achieved Bronze Healthy Schools status.

PE and Sport Newsletters
Celebrating PE and Sport – Events and Competitions
We take part in a range of competitions and events celebrating PE and Sport each year. Below, we have highlighted just some of these.
Dance
We love to boogie! Dance has gone from strength to strength at Meadlands, with whole school dance assemblies led by Miss 'Hoppers' Hopley, and over-subscribed clubs and curriculum dance lessons delivered by our wonderful dance teacher Lee (Boundless Dance). The dance club teams have performed or competed at events such as Ignition Dance Festival, Richdance, and Ham Fair.
Fitness
We love keeping fit and have been lucky enough to be visited by the wonderful Joe Wicks, 'Body Coach', on more than one occasion. Pupils and staff enjoyed taking part in fitness sessions and discussions with the fitness and healthy eating guru, and Meadlands children also featured on some of Joe's Youtube workouts!
Netball
Inspired by the success of the England Netball team in competitions like the Commonwealth Games, Key Stage 2 pupils enjoy taking part in netball matches and tournaments with other schools, in addition to a weekly netball club.
Football
Football continues to be incredibly popular at Meadlands, with pupils in all classes attending one of our three football clubs and various competitions and matches across the year.
Swimming
All KS2 classes attend six weeks of swimming lessons at Teddington Pool, with additional training opportunities for a selection of gifted and talented swimmers. The school squad also takes part in the Richmond Schools Swimming Gala.
Horse riding
Several of our pupils have had the opportunity to spend a day looking after and riding horses from local stables and we have successfully secured funding for 2 of our pupils to participate to attend weekly horse riding lessons at the stables.
Fundraising - Sport Relief
To celebrate and raise money for Sport Relief, team Meadlands have dressed as their favourite sporting heroes for the day.
Outdoor and Adventurous Activities
Years 4, 5 and 6 all attend a residential trip with an Outdoor Adventurous Activities focus. The lucky pupils have been able to take part in a range of activities, from team building games to raft building, and indoor skiing to climbing.
Running
We love running at Meadlands, and in addition to running club and borough athletics competitions, many of our pupils have attended weekend running events in the local area such as Richmond Runfest!
Yoga
We believe in healthy body and healthy mind working hand in hand, and have enjoyed yoga being part of our curriculum and clubs offer for several years now. This continues to be loved by pupils and led by our teaching staff to promote wellbeing in the classroom.
Sports Awards
Each summer we hold our annual Meadlands Sports Personality of the Year Awards. These celebrate children who have shown commitment, sportsmanship, amazing progress and/or outstanding achievement in Meadlands PE and sport (both curricular and extra-curricular) across the year. Here are some of last year’s winners, beaming with pride.
Sports and Healthy Living Week
One of the pupils' favourite weeks of the year is Sports and Healthy Living week, held in the summer term. This includes lots of exciting taster sessions, sports activities, sponsorship days and of course – sports days!
