Welcome to Year 1 Emperor Penguins Class!
We spend the first term of Year 1 getting to know the new expectations of a new group and getting to know each other and the class environment. Year 1 is quite different from Early Years so the children have lots of time to get used to their new routines and surroundings. We use the autumn term as a transition term, so the children still have some independent learning time in the afternoons where they can explore our resources and settle into a new timetable. We love reading in Year 1 and believe it is the key to confidence and success. We spend a lot of time learning our phonics sounds to help with this. In Year 1 we also learn the core subjects of Maths, English and Science. Through our exciting topics, we also learn History, Geography, Art & Design, Design & Technology, Computing, Music, PSHE, RE and PE.

Class door competition
Our door represents the learning value of imagination. We used the theme of ‘Pure Imagination’ from Willy Wonka, after the children decided that they wanted our door to represent a candy land filled with exciting ideas and colourful dreams. There is a picture of each child dressed as an Umpa Lumpa, and in the middle, an imagination machine where new ideas are carefully concocted and spit out innovative and wonderful concepts. The children really enjoyed making the candy canes and lollipops. Year 1 were the winners of the door competition were rewarded with a collection of beautiful books for the classroom.
Examples of work
In English children have been writing recounts of a trip to Kingston Fire station, and amazing descriptions of ‘The Disgusting Sandwich’. The children have been working really hard on their handwriting and spelling.
In our topic lessons we completed a whole project about moving vehicles. The children worked hard researching existing products and thought carefully about what they would need for their own vehicles. We have also done lots of work about weather and seasons in science. The children created a weekly weather chart and commented on what they found out.
In maths, the children have begun using purple pen to correct their work and explain their thinking further.
During Science Week, and linking to our ‘Green Fingers’ topic, Year 1 have been conducting experiments about leaves and how they grown and breathe.
Fantastic Home Learning
The children have completed some fantastic homework this year. It is lovely to see such a range, including; research homework, science and investigation homework, along with book reviews and research about new authors. Its also brilliant when children have the opportunity to visit places we have be learning about in class.
Big Bang and Celebrations
For the start of each of our topics we have a big bang day to get the children really excited about learning. During our topic about India, we really enjoyed celebrating Diwali:
For our Great Fire of London celebration day, Year 1 and 2 created their own authentic Tudor Houses, only to burn them and recreate the fire on Pudding Lane…

School trips and visitors
School trip to a boat at Teddington Lock – Eco Venturers.
We worked with the staff to learn about the parts of a boat and explore floating and sinking using junk modelling. We then helped the community and used grabbers and bags to collect rubbish from Ham lands and areas near the river. The children thoroughly enjoyed this trip.
School trip to Richmond Odeon.
The children were lucky enough to attend the ‘Into Film’ festival in Richmond where they watched a new film ‘Rock Dog’ at the cinema.
School trip to Ham Pond.
During kindness week at school, each class took part in doing random acts of kindness. We took it upon ourselves to go and feed the ducks at Ham Pond, we fed them different types of bird seed and grains.
During our Great Fire of London topic, we really enjoyed our trip to Kingston Fire Station where we learnt all about fire safety, and compared it to how they fought the fire in 1666. The firemen let us explore the inside of the fire engine, spray the hose and learn more about how to be safe at home.
