PE and Healthy Living

2017 - 2018

Jess Bunker, Sports and Healthy Living Leader and Year 2 Teacher

At Meadlands, we love PE and sport! We recognise the many benefits of PE and sport, and are dedicated to promoting healthy and active lifestyles. We have worked hard to develop a broad and varied PE curriculum, and ensure all children from KS1 and KS2 receive two hours of quality PE teaching a week: one from the class teacher and one from a specialist member of staff. Children in the Early Years are also provided with regular opportunities to develop physical and social skills through a wide range of physical activities and games. Through the strong curriculum as well as a wide variety of excellent clubs provided by specialist coaches, we hope to develop a love of physical activity and sport in all our children, and through this encourage life-long participation in sport.

Josh Penberthy, Sports Coach (whole school) and Teaching Assistant Year 6

With a huge field, football pitch, basketball pitch, tennis tables and specialist teaching led by Mr Penberthy, children thrive in sport at Meadlands. The school has developed strong links with local sports teams and we take part in a variety of inter-school and Borough-wide Competitions.

Rushpal (Y6) and Monty (Y3) Junior PE Leaders

Hi, I’m Rushpal and I am a junior PE leader. This term I have been a play leader which is when you organise playground games and you get the younger children to join in. We have also led whole school assemblies and helped Jo Wicks lead a fitness session! I am proud to be a member of the Junior Leadership Team because I want to make everyone love sports, not just me.

Hi, I’m Monty and I am a junior PE leader. I love PE and I do lots of sports clubs. This term I have planned my own assembly about getting fit and healthy. Tom Holland who plays Spiderman even recorded us a video message for it! I am proud to be a member of the Junior Leadership Team because I get to do stuff to help other people.

Awards

Meadlands has once again achieved the Gold School Games Mark, recognising its outstanding provision in Sport. The School Games Mark is a government led awards scheme launched in 2012 to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community, and allowing schools to evaluate their provision.  We have also achieved bronze Healthy Schools status, with our silver status soon to be awarded also.

Celebrating PE – events, competitions and celebrations

The wonderful children at Meadlands love taking part in sports clubs and also take part in regular inter-school and intra-school competitions and events celebrating PE and sport. Below highlights just some of these from the last year, including our exciting sports awards.

We love to boogie! Dance has gone from strength to strength at Meadlands, with two incredibly popular clubs delivered by the wonderful Lee from Boundless Dance. The dance troups take part in various exciting events and performances across the year, including Ignition Dance Festival, Richdance and of course – Ham Fair.

We love keeping fit and were lucky enough to be visited by Channel 4’s Body Coach, the wonderful Joe Wicks, this year. The children and adults all enjoyed taking part in fitness sessions and discussions with the fitness and healthy eating guru!

The school squad also takes part in the Richmond Schools Swimming Gala, with some children successful in getting through to (and doing incredibly well) in the finals.

Swimming Gala Finals 2018

Huge congratulations to our amazing young swimmers, Lucas (y4) and Fabio (y5) on their achievements in the Richmond Schools swimming gala finals this week. Both achieved second place in their freestyle heats and beat their previous times by 2 seconds, which is fantastic. We're really proud of the commitment and determination they have both shown. Well done team!

Horse riding

A handful of very lucky children have had the opportunity to spend a day looking after and riding horses from local stables. What a treat, and what brave and confident children!
